Biography

Heather Waters’ music has been referred to as animated, honest, and expressive.

 

Since the beginning of her music career in 2003, Heather Waters has not stood still.  Heather began performing her original compositions in live music venues in and around Cape Town, South Africa. Performing alone, with her band or collaborating with other artists, Heather Waters always delivers a striking animated sincerity to her music!

Heather released her first 5-track EP in Cape Town in 2004 and went on to share her music with the British Public in 2004/5, visiting the UK and Ireland. In 2006 she returned to Cape Town, with bundles of new songs and an even more richly developed style and released her first full album ‘Lyrics in My Pocket, in March 2007. 

2006/7 were busy years for Heather as she performed in South Africa at popular live music venues such as the SABC Studios, Mercury Lounge and the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre in Cape Town. Heather was featured in the popular 'Like Honey Show': a showcasing of female musicians and performers at the Obs Cafe Theatre. Both years, Heather was invited back again and again. During this time, Heather continued to entertain audiences at  music venues, day-festivals and live on radio during her regular short journeys revisiting the United Kingdom.

Lyrically it’s readily apparent that Waters doesn’t shy away from hard truths. Her expressive folk rock style is captured in songs like “Walk Alone” and her distinctive voice and well-developed song-writing is richly displayed in songs such as “Masquerade” and “The Money Came In Today”.

In 2008 and 2009 ABC Broadcasts (USA) voted Heather ‘Best Artist in Style (Folk), and her song ‘Masquerade’ – ‘Best Song in Style’ (Folk), with two of her songs receiving regular airplay in parts of USA and Europe. Heather also featured in the lineup of festivals in South Africa, such as the Knysna Oyster Festival and Backpackers Festival, and continued performing at community events in and around the South Africa

Heather Waters’ unforgettable sound captivates both young and old; this was particularly evident during her Roadtrippin Tour in 2008, a project with her band involving a series of tours along the Garden Route from Cape Town to Durban in South Africa..

Heather and her band were warmly received by a colourful mix of ages, races and cultures, as they entertained their audiences while raising awareness and funds for various Community Projects en-route. Putting thousands of miles on the clock of their VW Campervan, they visited and performed at Backpackers Lodges, Live Music Venues, Festivals and Community Projects along the Eastern Coast of South Africa. On vocals and rhythm guitar, Heather was supported by her Cape Town band, Nick Frost on drums and percussion, Kirsten ‘Pixie’ Snyman on violin, and Nick Kuiper on bass guitar.

 

 

2009 was a year of Endless Summer for Heather Waters, as she left her band in South Africa and headed across the oceans, to follow the sun, and seek fresh inspiration.  She began the year in Majorca, near Spain, promoting her album and recent EP ‘Hope you are Happy’ to the warm and welcoming European audiences across the island, Heather and her percussionist performed Street Music in the Plaza’s of Palma de Mellorca, also entertaining at live music venues in the south and north of the island.  Heather continued to explore the coastline of the Mediterranean, visiting Menorca, and France, her melodic tunes and distinctive voice could even be heard echoing down the cobblestone streets from a restaurant in the Old Town of  Porto Vacchio in Corsica.

  Heather returned to South Africa towards the end of 2009 just in time for summer, an EP release, AND another tour:    In the 'GIRLS ROCKIN THE ROAD Tour' Heather Waters was joined by two other female-led folk rock/indie bands, Nat & the Beanstalks and the Mari Bosman Band.  Heather was supported on tour by Nick Kuiper on bass guitar, Ben Badenhorst on guitar, Kirsten ‘Pixi’ Snyman on violin and Mike Scott on drums and percussion.   

Heather released her new EP 'The Money Came In Today' on tour and early in 2010, popular Surf Reality TV Show "Billabong Girls Get Out There Series" featured both Heather's songs ‘Rainbows’ and 'Being on a Boat’, the latter a product from her recently released EP.

With a fresh collaboration of energy and style, Heather Waters was joined by well-travelled and zany guitarist Craig Viljoen along with the effervescent Jeane Combe on drums and percurssion.  This spirited trio entered as Street Performers in an audition process held in Cape Town during April, and were selected by PANSA (Performing Arts Network of South Africa) to perform for the FIFA World Cup 2010 events during June and July 2010.  Between the stage and the street this lively trio never stopped with the entertainment! They took part in bringing the City to life during the World Cup and were seen on stage at the Vygieskraal Stadium, along the Fan-Walk near Green Point Stadium and making jammy music on the street at many of the Park n Ride sites across Cape Town and its diversity of suburbs.
